Active Refrigeration

Some product types need to have constant Active Refrigeration so that they do not spoil. Reefer containers that require Active Refrigeration are usually moved with a connected generator.

API

Application Programming Interface. A B2B process for exchanging/presenting data.

Baplie

A vessel manifest message that is sent from the Vessel Operator to the port. Import containers are loaded into the port system from the Baplie or Manifest file.

B2B

Business to Business. PortConnect uses this to refer to messages that are sent electronically to/from PortConnect’s system and a user’s system.

Break Bulk

Break bulk cargo, also called general cargo, is goods that are stowed on board ships in individually counted units

Bulk

Cargo that is shipped loosely and unpackaged in large quantities

Business acknowledgement message

A message that PortConnect sends to users to indicate the status of a pre-advice submission

Callback(s)

Event messages that PortConnect can send to users. Callbacks are sent via an API process.

Carrier

Most commonly used to refer to Trucking Companies but can also be used to refer to Shipping Lines.

Datafeed

PortConnect receives container data from partner ports via Datafeed files

DG

Dangerous Goods aka Hazardous goods.

EDI

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the electronic interchange of business information using a standardized format. In Shipping this mostly refers to Edifact type messages.

EDIFACT

United Nations/Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport is an international standard for electronic data interchange

EMS Code

The EmS code refers to prevention and emergency procedures (Emergency Schedules), which ships carrying dangerous goods must live up to. The codes are divided into F codes for fire and S codes for spillage.

Flatrack

A container type that has no side walls or roof.

Freight Forwarder

An organisation that acts as an intermediary between Exporters/Importers, Shipping Lines and Trucking Companies.

Functional acknowledgement message

A message that PortConnect sends to B2B users to indicate the status of a pre-advice submission

Impediments

Stops or holds that restrict the movement of a container while it is at a port.

Hazardous Class

Hazardous products are split into different classes.

  • Class 1: explosives.

  • Class 2: flammable gases.

  • Class 3: flammable liquids.

  • Class 4: flammable solids.

  • Class 5: oxidising substances.

  • Class 6: substances toxic to people.

  • Class 8: corrosive substances.

  • Class 9: substances toxic to the environment.

ISO Type

A code used to define a type of shipping container e.g. 2200

JSON

A message language used by the PortConnect APIs

Line Clearance

An instruction from a Shipping Line to a Port that a container can be released from the port.

Line Operator (LOP)

An organisation that arranges the movement of containers on Vessels. AKA Shipping Line

Manifest

A vessel manifest message that is sent from the Vessel Operator to the port. Import containers are loaded into the port system from the Baplie or Manifest file.

MFAG

Medical First Aid Guide. A code to represent what medical treatment should be provided after contact with a Dangerous Goods product.

Notifications

Event messages that PortConnect can send to users. Notifications are sent via an XML/Email process.

OOG

Out of Gauge. Some container types do not have sides or a top and products on the container can stick out of the standard container size (gauge).

Partner Port

Ports that PortConnect has an agreement to work with.

Platform container

Platform containers have an extremely strong bottom construction and come without roof, door or sides

Pre-Advice

A message sent to the Port with the details of a container to be delivered to the port.

Reefer

A refrigerated container type.

Shipper

The owner of the cargo or the person exporting the goods. e.g. Fonterra

Shipping Line

An organisation that arranges the movement of containers on Vessels. AKA Line Operator

Storage Pre-Advice

A message sent to Ports of Auckland with details of a container to be delivered to the POAL Link Facility.

TEU

Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (e.g. there are two TEU in a 40 foot container).

Trading Party

An organisation set up in PortConnect which users are linked to.

Trucking Company

An organisation that arranges the movement of containers on Trucks.

Vessel Operator (VOP)

The specific Shipping Line that is managing/operating a Vessel. Each vessel visit will have one Vessel Operator and one of more Shipping Lines or LOPs on the vessel. E.g. on vessel ‘Olivia Maersk’, Maersk is the Vessel Operator and also a Line Operator while Hamburg Sud is just a Line Operator

XML

A message language used by PortConnect for B2B processes including Pre-Advice and Notifications

UN Code

This usually refers to a UN Dangerous Goods code. UN Codes are associated with different Hazardous Classes.

UN LoCode

A UN defined list of Location Codes starting with the country code followed by a more specific location eg. NZAKL, NZTRG, JPTKO
